Little Miss Cutthroat Music Video

"Little Miss Cutthroat.  Your the Queen of my drift boat.  You swam into my life today, straight out of the blue.  Little Miss Cutthroat. My Yellowstone dreamboat.  More than just my fly is hooked on you."

Song from www.fishingmusic.com.

Ben Winship & David Thompson, producers of the acclaimed "Fishing Music" cd, comes a music video for one of the songs on their newly-released "Fishing Music II" -- a super-hilarious musical story about a guy who falls in love with the fish on his line. Shot by renowned cinematographer Justin Lubke on the scenic Yellowstone River and in Bozeman, Montana and Jackson, Wyoming. Written by David Thompson, starring Kent Davis, with Shasta Grenier as the trout. (Source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DxqNLeBqFs)

My Top Favorite Flies for Colorado Fly Fishing

Fly Fishing Colorado an angler will need a wide array of flies in their box.  However every fisherman has their go to flies.  In no particular order, here are my top favorite flies for Colorado Fly Fishing

Mysis Shrimp-  Many great opportunities to catch a fat monster fishing tail waters.  Rivers like the Taylor and the Frying Pan are nationally well known for large trout and this is due to these mysis shrimp.  State record size trout have been caught using mysis shrimp.

Elk Hair Caddis-  You can't beat catching rising tout on a nice summer day.  I prefer my caddis to wear a simple life jacket, or foam.  This helps with presentation.

Wolly Bugger-  Streaming a Wolly Bugger in front of bigger trout is like ringing the dinner bell. It will also help get reaction bites from non-eaters.

Copper John-  A great go to fly with many colors to choose from; copper, red, green, and many more.  I really like the candy apple green.  Great upper fly and one of my confidence flies.

RS2- This fly was designed by Colorado local, Rim Chung.  He designed it to be a simplified nymph and resemble a mayfly emerging  If you are lucky enough, you may run into him on the river or a local fly shop.  He will tell you this is the only fly you will need.

Parachute Adams-  A great dry fly to help bring fish feeding below the surface to the top.  This pattern can be used on many rivers throughout the year.

Personally Hand Tied-  Nothing is better than catching a trout on a fly you hand-tied, yourself.

Winter Fly Fishing in Colorado

Wintertime for most folks in Colorado means heading to the busy and expensive ski slopes. Lucky for us fisherman, there are still great opportunities to get our fishing fix in the winter.   Generally fishing in the winter a fisherman will find small crowds and still have the opportunity to catch a monster.  To have a great experience winter fly fishing it is very important to check the weather and plan ahead, wear the appropriate clothing, and fish tail-waters.

Even though it's winter, Colorado still has many nice days and checking the weather can be the difference between a cold, snowy, miserable day or a day filled with catching fish.  Fish have been know to be less active and slow their eating habits during a storm.  The trout should be most active when the pressure is rising but still not high.  Once you have choose a day based on the weather, plan for it being cold in the mornings and evenings than the middle of the day.

Wearing the appropriate clothing will also help make sure the winter elements doesn't ruin the experience for fly fishing.  First and most important, wear moisture wicking fabrics like polyester, fleece or wool.  Thick wool socks and fleece pants are a must.  Next, wear several layers so as the weather & your body heats and cools you can adjust easily.  The ultimate goal is to stay warm and dry.  It is also a good idea to always have a spare, warm, dry set of clothes back in the car to change into if needed.  A wind and water proof jacket shell is recommend to help keep warm as well in the tail-water locations.

Tail-water fly fishing consist of fishing below the many man made reservoirs Colorado has to offer. The damn will shoot out "warmer" water through the winter, keeping the river from icing over. Generally the main food source for tail-water trout is something coming out of the lake, like mysis shrimp.  The trout will hang out below the damns fattening up with all the easy dinner.
Winter-time fly fishing doesn't have to be scary, grab a cup of coffee, relax, and go for it.

Colorado Greenback Cutthroat Trout

Colorado is known for the Cutthroat Trout, yet very few know much about the Greenback Cutthroat Trout.

The Greenback Trout is not only native to Colorado, but can only be found here in Colorado. However, this trout probably is the hardest for fishermen to find and generally requires hiking.  While fishing for the Greenback Trout, you will find yourself secluded and surrounded by the beautiful Colorado wilderness.

Another thing that makes this trout so special it was thought to be instinct from the 1930’s to 1957 when a population of Greenbacks was found in Rocky Mountain National Park.  Through conservation and reintroduction programs, the park now holds many opportunities for Greenback fishing as well as across the state.

The experience of catching and releasing a Greenback Cutthroat Trout should be on every Colorado Angler’s bucket list.

The Greenback Cutthroat was the major inspiration for creating Mile High Trout, Performance Fishing Apparel for the Colorado Angler.  Show your Cutthroat Pride.
